What's the big deal, why does Stained Glass cost so much? It's just some glass that's been cut in different shapes, Right?

Why Does Stained Glass Cost So Much? |
|
Building Stained Glass artwork is a very exacting
craft. It takes a lot of skill and practice to build good stained glass.
And once you acquire the skills to create great glass, you are still limited. There is only so much that a person can do, because the work must be handcrafted. We can't fire up some machine to do the work for us, we have to cut each piece of glass by hand and grind it smooth and foil each piece and then solder them together. |
|
|
|
We do this, and it's no small feat. It takes hours
to build the smallest of decorative pieces and we run the risk of lead exposure and
endure the pain of cuts from glass as we grind it and then we endure the
pain of burns from the flux as it gets into our skin. The picture above
shows cuts to my hands after just cutting out and grinding the parts for
24 dragonflies. I'm pretty fast and I can only make two an hour.
Sometimes, we literally "work our fingers to the bone." Many
times, we charge much less for stained glass than we should.
Rest assured that your panel will receive the attention and care that it deserves to make it a beautiful, one of a kind work of art. Our blood, sweat and tears go into every window! (We wash them well, when they're done) |
